A Letter To My Midwife...And The Rest...

Shiloh Selah Love
May 5 2009 3:32pm
Name meaning: Eternal gift of peace and love...

I am posting this letter, in response to a request for further payment to my midwife...who in our opinion, failed us...but in so many ways it is a huge part of our birth story...
**********************************************************************

Ellen,

I have written this letter 100 times in my head. It has taken me some time to try and figure out exactly what went wrong with you and I…although, here I am, 2 months later, still completely baffled. You see, there was obviously a huge emotional disconnection that I either missed somewhere along the way, or you brought with you to my labor.

My labor with Solomon was hard, intense, long and constant. I powered through it and gave birth to him. I was in a hospital with an OBGYN and nurses who encouraged me and directed me and helped me. These were people that I hadn’t really built a relationship with, they definitely were never in my home or had met my family…yet they found it in their hearts to be a source of strength for me when I was in a situation that I had never been in before. They believed in me and reassured me and guided me when I asked for their help. I was very honest about my birth with Solomon. I never made it sound short, easy or less than it was. I expected Shiloh’s birth to be relaxing, wonderful, shorter than Solomon’s, but still a good amount of work. Perhaps you weren’t prepared? Perhaps you didn’t want to be a support for me, you just wanted to catch my baby? Perhaps you had a bad day or carried some sort of baggage into my home during my labor? Perhaps you just don’t like to wait? I am not sure. Whatever your reasoning is, you did not turn out to be what I expected…in any way. Will and I are very disappointed.

If I truly looked back, I could honestly state that I felt your apprehension well before my labor. Your constant complaining about “how far you had to drive” to get to our prenatal appointments began to make Will and I feel guilty…although, we were paying you…and your comments were unprofessional and out of line. Perhaps that should have been a sign to us, as to what was to come, but we over looked it, hoping that your professionalism would come out during labor…but that was not the case.

After my water broke, I called you up. You advised me to use hot compresses on my nipples to induce contractions. I followed your advise wholly and completely. Contractions slowly started coming. I was getting really excited. I loved and embraced them. I really focused deep with in, feeling my body start to work, just as it should have. You and I were in touch throughout the day. You advised me to call you as contractions came about 5 minutes apart. I sat working with my body for the afternoon, really enjoying labor, knowing full well that my body was doing what it was made to do. My family and I decided to get my focus off of “labor” and go out to dinner. At the restaurant I was really working hard. The contraction were coming strong and steady, stopping me from doing anything other than working through them…every five minutes for about an hour. We decided to wait to call you until we got home, but we didn’t want to wait too long because of how far away you live. We called. You were on your way.

I was upstairs, excited for you to get to our home, to our birth, to be apart of it and support us during this wonderful time. I heard Will answer the door and ask how you were. In a put-out sounding sigh, you said, “Ugh, tired…and tired of driving.” My heart sank. “Am I burdening her or inconveniencing her? Isn’t this what I am paying her for?” I thought. I was feeling bummed but I tried to shake it off because I was so proud of my body, so confident in my body’s ability to give birth to this baby. So you ventured up stairs and asked to check me…which by the way, was a joke. Haven’t you delivered nearly 500 babies? You couldn’t even find my cervix! There is infection risk and other risks during vaginal checks, but you prolonged them to at least 5 minutes each time…as if it were a joke to you…”fishing around in there” acting as though it were your first time. I still don’t know or understand why you were so incapable of doing this. It was ridiculous! I dreaded it every time for many reasons, but this was one of them. I digress…back to your checking me. I had barely been laboring for a few short hours, coping wonderfully, enjoying my labor to the fullest…you finally were able to inform me I was 4 cm. I cannot express to you how elated I was. My heart was jumping with joy…but you quickly deflated me. “You think that’s good news? I have to say, I’m disappointed!” you informed me, What???? I labored 20 horrendous hours with Solomon before I got that far. At this point, I barely felt like I was in labor…but you, the person who was supposed to be my biggest (not to mention professionally trained) support, was voicing your disappointment with my body’s amazing progress. My heart was beginning to sink below the point of ignoring. In fact, my body could no longer ignore it. Whenever you were around my contractions slowed. I finally told Will that I needed to get out of the house because your annoyed presence was halting my contractions. Will and I went for a walk…the contractions started getting harder and closer together…until I came back into the room with you. They slowed way down. I felt like the best thing to do was talk with you and let you know how your actions were affecting my labor. I informed you that your constantly talking about being so tired and talking about how you wished you were at home sleeping, and voicing your disappointment in my body was really weighing on me. You made a joke of it and we tried to move on…you said “oh your not an inconvenience…BUT…if you don’t do something soon I’m going home hahaha…” Still a little baffled by you, I started feeling in the depths of my heart that you might not be capable of delivering my baby. The rest of my birth team, one by one, came to me and asked “Is everything ok with Ellen? She seems to be acting like she does not want to be here…” We couldn’t have agreed more…but at the point, what other choice did we have?

I labored and labored and labored. Each time you checked me, there was progress yet each time you still acted disappointed. I begged for your input. “What should I do Ellen?” Your response? “I don’t know.” You couldn’t tell me positions, movements…anything. This is your job. This is what you are paid to do…“I don’t know” is not a response I would expect in such a circumstance. You made me a few tea mixtures which I drank as quickly as I could, but they seemed to have little to no effect. I waited for direction, but it never came.

Throughout the night, I was contracting every 10-15 minutes. I tried to sleep in between them. You were able to sleep too. I was hoping that after some rest, you would be more pleasant, positive and refreshed. That was not the case. I continued to take walks and took a hot shower. You asked me if I had any fears that were holding me back. My biggest fear was not performing as I should and you continuing to lose hope in me and become unable to catch my baby. But instead of talking about that, we talked about my relationship with my mother and how I feared that might affect my relationship with my daughter. Unfortunately discussing this didn’t speed up or intensify my contractions. The only thing that helped me was leaving the room and being away from what I felt was your constant disappointment in me.

Eventually, I was a good 7-8cm, You were still lacking confidence and this is when I started to panic…You decided to make a phone call in my presence. You called a fellow midwife to ask her advise. You informed her of my “lack of progress.” You told her that the baby’s head was in the wrong place, she was up way to high, that I wasn’t progressing and that you did not know what to do. My heart broke. I was so confused. I knew that my performance wasn’t up to par in your eyes. You wanted something more. I pushed it out of my head for, what would be, the last time. I had to fight it off and push forward, fight for my desire to deliver my baby at home.

Pretty suddenly, the contractions got intense, really intense and I began to need every ounce of help I could get. Where were you? In my sons room, sitting in his rocking chair. Candice came to me and said, “Amber, I know I have no experience other than delivering my own two children, but I know you are in transition. This baby is coming soon!” You never told me this, never reassured me that I could do this…but something did happen. I began to slip in to a state of hysteria (which, obviously, is a MAJOR sign of transition…and had I not been in this state, I would have clearly seen that.) My contraction were more powerful than I had been having up to this point. They were coming every 2 minutes or so. I needed help, seriously help, to get through them! I yelled, “SOMONE HELP ME!!! I do not know what I am doing…I am not the professional here!” It took awhile, but all of a sudden, you stepped up to the plate. I believe you got me through 6 or so contractions. You looked in to my eyes and helped me breathe through every moment. Finally…that was what I have been waiting for…but in my heart, I still had the nagging that you would not be able to get me though this birth. You started talking about how the cord might be too short or might be fixed around her neck. Then…you said, “I wouldn’t be laboring this long at home…I would have gone to the hospital hours ago.” I lost it. You didn’t trust my body. You didn’t want my body to go through this process any longer. How could I go on if I felt like my professional support had already “checked out?” I went to the bathroom and became frantic to the rest of my birth team. “This is an emergency…get me to the hospital, this birth cannot happen here.”

Candice stepped up to the plate, walking me through transition. She followed all of the signs that I was giving her and got me through the process. I got to the hospital begging for relief. The nurses and Doctor, along with Will, April and Candice, worked extremely hard to convince me that I DID indeed have the power and strength to get through this. I was so amazed, even though I didn’t believe them, that these nurses who knew NOTHING about our situation or me, were at my side telling me “YOU ARE DOING THIS!!” They checked me about 30 minutes after you had last checked me and I must say, had NO problems AT ALL. The nurse was in and out in less than 5 seconds…not 5 minutes. The head was perfectly positioned, I was at 9 cm. The Doctor came in 2 minutes later, checked me again. I was at 10 and was beginning to push. It took the encouragement of my amazing birth team and these strangers to convince me that this baby was coming out…

Five minutes and four pushes later…Shiloh was born. Will, Candice, April and I were elated. After all of the struggle we had at home, it took exactly 32 minutes from arriving in the hospital parking lot to Shiloh emerging from me…it was over. We were all so confused as to what had gone wrong at home, with you…and to this day…our questions go unanswered.

Personally, I feel confusion. More than confusion. I don’t know what happened. I had initially connected with you deeply. I feel like slowly we lost that…and by the time my labor began, something was seriously wrong.

I received your request for additional payment. First, I have to say, I am extremely offended that you stated that the reason for the transfer was “maternal exhaustion and difficulty dealing with contraction pain.” I will agree that maternal exhaustion was present…but I cannot think of a birth that wasn’t somewhat exhausting. Do you really truly believe that I could not deal with the pain? Do you believe that you didn’t know how to walk me through the last phases of birth? I paid you the amount you have already recieved for less that 4 months of prenatal visits and what turned out to be a pretty disappointing (and partial) birth experience. I do not feel that an additional payment is deserved. What is it that you feel merits that? Because we are extremely disappointed with our experience. I spoke to many midwife friends and my in laws who used your services…and no one understands or can make sense of what happened.

I hope you can see things from our perspective and understand why we have come to this decision.

We wish you well in all that you do…
Amber and Will Cole.

I must add more to the story...because as I was writing this letter in response to her, I felt that so much of it was my birth story...but there are TONS of positive things.

First of all, I wouldn't change a thing about what happened. It was exactly as it should have been. Had I not used a midwife for most of my birth, things would have been extremely different. My water broke a day and a half before I actually gave birth to Shiloh...so had I had a hospital birth there is no doubt I would have not been able to labor at my own pace. I would have been hooked to a pit drip and in turn had an epidural I am sure...all of which I could have lived with...but laboring at home was the most awesome thing ever. (sans the above haha) Giving birth to Shiloh, with no epidural or interevention at all was the most insane, intense, miraculous, incredible high I have ever had. I must say, every time I think of those feelings, I can still tap into those incredible feelings. Ahhh...amazing. I know I said it before, but I must say it again. Tapping into that inner part of me, where I found the strength to endure and press onward when Itruely thought I had nothing left, gave me the strenth I needed to erase the fears that I had about having a daughter.

Who knows what I will do if I am to have another child...but the "recovery" was so delightful that I can hardly remember being in pain. With Solomon, it took me 2 years to think about having kids. I tore, I was in so much pain, bleeding profusely...but with Shiloh I was taking mile long walks when she was 3 days old!!! Its amazing...still...her birth was as perfect as she is...

I must state this little amazing child is so perfect. She is sensitive and cuddly and adores me ::sigh:: She sleeps like a dream. She has been sleeping through the night since like 3 weeks old or younger...even then I had to wake her up after 6 hours because she was sleeping soooo long. She is heavenly...I love her with my whole heart and I am so completely looking forward to beingher mommy for the rest of her life...My Shiloh Selah Love...the love of my life...

In closing...I must say this. I trust the midwifery model of care whole heartedly. Nothing in my birth went wrong aside from an emotional disconnect...and most times, in hospital births there isn't the same emotional connection that one can have with a midwife...most obgyns come and go quickly because of all the patients they are committed to...I would fully consider this same birthing method again for many reasons...and I just want to clarify that my birth was wholly beautiful and perfect...and I would not want to change a thing...

Love Is Abundant...

We'll start off with some photos from my mom, Aunt and cousins visit...
My aunt took tons of photos and I really haven't found much time to take any...
so thanks Aunt Laura for all the memories :)

Aunt Laura
My mom

Well...it has been a long time. I know that I really want to share my birth story, but I am just not ready yet. It was such a crazy, wonderful, perfect time and I am having so much trouble doing it justice...so it must wait.

I do want to say, Shiloh is amazing. She loves to nurse. She loves for me to cuddle her...and by cuddle i do mean, literally nuzzle into my armpit. She like really really loves me...and oh my goodness, it melts me. She is such a wonderful little baby. I have no complaints whatsoever.
Something that I am ready to share is this... although I don't know which avenue I would take for another birth (Will says there will be NO MORE...but in case he changes his mind ;)) ...pushing that little amazing child out of me naturally was the most amazing thing I have ever experienced. I was at the point in my laboring where I thought I could not go on...I was literally longing for a c-section (gasp, I know...Im just being truthful) I was blacking out and couldn't breath and was finally being reassured YOU CAN AND WILL PUSH THIS BABY OUT!!!! From somewhere deep inside of me, I found strength that I did not know existed...and tapping into that strength was the most incredible thing I have ever experienced. The most amazing feelings came over me...it was truly remarkable...the best part was, accoplishing such an amazing thing, in my opinion, THE MOST AMAZING THING, allowed me to know that all of my fears about not being able to love Shiloh the way she would need, were nothing to worry about any longer...for I have within me the strength of a million mothers...and I am capable of being everything she needs...forever...
My sweet little Solomon is IN LOVE with "sister" as he calls her. He loves to hold her and tell her "its ok sister" when she cries...and he tries to share all of his cars with her. Its amazing. He just wants to look at her non stop. There have been NO negative sides to bringing Shiloh into our lives AT ALL...he hasn't acted jealous or different at all...its been more perfect than I could have ever ever dreamed of.
We have visitors in and out till the end of July...haha...so its still crazy here...which is why im also having trouble getting my birth story worked on...the last thing I want to do if I have a moment of silence is sit at the computer. And Shiloh is getting so big so fast that I can hardly bare to spend a moment away from her...
All is well, love is abundant...and life is exactly as it should be....

A Little Girl...

This pregnancy has flown by in so many ways. With Wills graduation, our cross country move and pretty much the busiest little toddler on the planet, all of a sudden, this little girl is almost here. I have struggled in ways that I didn't with Solomon. My emotions have been off the charts...so many rough days, major struggles with anxiety, depression and anger. I have also really been dealing with attaching to this baby. I have a lot of fear about mothering a little girl. I haven't been able to get very enthusiastic about this baby and I'm already feeling mommy guilt because of it. I do not have a good relationship with my own mother and I don't know what a mother/daughter love feels like. I say that for no other reason than my mom isn't capable of offering me that and that is just what it is...I have come to grips with that and we function accordingly. But I want more for my own daughter. I want her to feel as if she is the light of my life. I want her to feel good enough. I want her to feel beautiful. I want to be someone she can count on. I know I will fail at all of these many times but I at least know that this is what I want for my daughter.

There are a lot of things that make me nervous about having a little baby again...especially a girl. All of the things I have been feeling have been overshadowed by everything that is going on...and I have been feeling so much anticipation of having my sister come and live with us this summer that I am trying to just stop thinking of the negative things.

This little girl moves at least as much as Solomon...but I think a little more. At first (because Im such a darn pessamist) I just kept dreading having two wild children :). But one night I was just basking in her movement...and I really felt like God just picked me up and reminded me how this all started. It was purely His doing that this baby came down to us. And I knew knew knew that there was a baby waiting to come down to us...I could feel this child beckoning to us and was really disappointed that we didn't really try hard enough to get pregnant...I was THRILLED when I found out it had been enough...and then when I found out we were having a girl, I began to second guess what I had felt... All of that to say...as she was thrashing around within me, I was reminded of those feelings from the very beginning...I was reminded that our family needs her and she needs us...we are a perfect fit for the other and I found such a peace about that.

We really enjoy our midwife and are hoping that our birth goes smoothly. Again, I am not really nervous and I feel more prepared for this birth that I did with Solomons...although I felt the same way before Solomons birth too haha. It is really nice having a health care professional who cares about what you want and actually cares about the health of your baby too...doesn't just spend every prenatal visit trying to figure out if something is wrong with the child or not. I feel bad for new moms. SO many mothers are scared in to doing things, whether by doctors, family or other moms...and they don't have to be. Christy is an avid voice for midwifery and mothers trusting God with their bodies...but she brought up a good point. Often ones faith in God kinda flies out the window during birth..."I can't do it" "My body doesn't work" "I don't do pain" and the truth is, apart from emergency cases (which we are lucky to have medical technology in those cases) God created our bodies to do this...he creaeted us for this...we work...our bodies aren't disfunctional whimpy nothings...they are strong powerhouses that are capable of giving our children everything they need from the very beginning. I don't say this with judgement or with eyes looking down on anyone...but I do think it is a scary time when we start putting more trust in man made medicine. One thing that I love about things like Chinese Medicine, Chiropractic Medicine, Midwifery...is that it IS scriptural...Jesus himself practiced putting his hands on people and the power that the body has to restore and heal itself. It is encouraging to me. I have become some who basically doesn't trust the medical community at all...apart from emergencies (stitches, broken bones, real emergencies) because it has done nothing but make me sicker and unhealthy. As a mother, I wont have someone tell me what I HAVE to do in my birth...the tests I HAVE to have, the monitoring that I HAVE to have, the pointless IV's stuck in my arm for NO REASON, the ridiculous tests they want to perform on my newborn, the gunk they want to throw in my babies eyes, and the toxic waste they want to fill my babies bodies...I am their mother. God gave them to me. I am fully equppied to birth them and care for them and I will decide what goes in/on their bodies...not you!!! Again this isn't emergencies Im talking about...because that is where medicine has its place...but not in our every day lives. It does nothing but make us sicker. I am thankful for the choices I have...and hope that I always make the right ones.

Solomon seems to be bonding with his sister. And oh how sweet it is. He knows she lives in my belly for now...although he thinks more along the line of "in my belly button." He talks to her and hugs her and it is just the sweetest thing. The other day he was in the bathroom with me as I was about to shower. I had my clothes off and he looked and ran to me..."MY BABY!!!!" he said and grabbed my stomach. It was SUPER sweet. Two days ago we were napping and he woke up a little early for my liking so I just layed there with my eyes clothes. He started rubbing my face with his silky blanket (which is a rare treat because NO ONE touches his blanket). Then he lifted up my shirt and started rubbing it on my my stomach. I thought it was sweet...but I melted when he wispered "I just love my sister very very much." Awwwww...seriously...too much. I can't wait for him to meet her. It is going to be the sweetest thing ever.

We have everything but ONE box unloaded now, thanks to Aprils visit. (49 more days until she comes back!!!) So now we can start hanging things on the walls and really getting ready for this baby...its exciting and a whole gammet of emotions...pray for us as we prepare...

Birth, Solomon's Sayings and Dun Dun Dun...The ER.

The Human Pacifier gave a heads up that 20/20 was going to be about Orgasmic Birth. At first, I was super excited but then realized that it was probably NOT going to be what I would hope for. They started off with some clips from Orgasmic Birth. They quoted the Bible verse about "having pain in childbirth" and then showed women enjoying birth, being empowered by birth, and offering their children the safest, most calm environment for bringing a child into the the world. the interviewers asked every question skeptically and I understand that, but it seems like they should have been a little more neutral. They moved on to other topics. One was breastfeeding. Personally, if Solomon still wanted to nurse (he self weaned at 13 months which totally shattered my heart...I was NOT ready!) I would still be nursing. I do not think he is too old and I would do it without a problem. There was a mother who was still nursing a Kindergartner. She said, "This is what I feel is best for my son and I would never ever push this onto someone else if they didn't want it for their child." She had nursed her other 2 children until they were 6 and those children talked fondly of it. She made an awesome point. "We use women's breasts to sell everything from beer to motorcycles...but when someone uses their breasts for what they are made for, everyone gets repulsed and offended..." Pretty profound I thought... the world average for weaning from beast feeding is age 4. If someone wants to nurse their child as long as they want, why should they have to closet that experience? Another segment was about home birthing/unassisted birthing. They seemed to make it look scary and dangerous and frightening...what happens if you actually look at the statistics??? Because home births, attended by midwives, are FAR safer than any hospital births!!! People don't educate themselves and they are fed garbage by the media and their OBGyn's so they end up with unnecessary drugs and C-sections, when that is NOT what they wanted. It is so disheartening!!! Here was the kicker for me. The interviewer read a statement from the good ol' AMA, which in my opinion needs to get a MAJOR boot in the ass, that read something like...there is another human being involved and they have a right to be in a safe environment [hospital] when they come into the world.... WHAT!?!?!?! First of all, the AMA is pretty much the biggest funder of abortions...and NOW they want to give the babies rights??? But a few hours BEFORE labor started, they were all for women's rights...but when it comes to giving birth, they are for the OBGyn/Hospital to erase the rights of women... I cannot stress the importance of this enough. Women need to know their rights. They need to know that they have the right to make choices for themselves and their child. Maybe they don't care? That's a different story...just as sad...but every woman has the right to have the birth her and her child deserve...

Whew...ok that is my soapbox moment.

Solomon has been cracking us up lately. He is TOO much!!! He seems to have an ear for the "bad words" that I don't really want my toddler saying. Those darn Pixar movies say too many "shut ups," "stupids," and the like. We have been working on talking kindly lately because when we tell him that those aren't the kindest of words, he, of course, wants to repeat them over and over ha. He doesn't mean them in the way they are intended to be used but it still doesn't sound nice. Anyway...aside from that....he has the funniest sense of humor!! Here are some funny sayings as of late.

*Will told Solomon that he needed to ask me something..."Hmmm, that would be necessary daddy."

*My mom said, "Solomon, what is in Mommy's tummy?" He said, "Um some babies."

*He was trying to get Will to listen to me and he said, "DADDY FOCUS!!!"

*This isn't that cute as much as a little stinkerish but its kinda funny. When he is frustrated he puts his hand up in my face and says "Don't talk to me like that Momma!"

*When I ask him to do something and he feels that he is doing something more important he puts up one finger and holds it up to me and says "Just a second Mommy, Im real real busy!"

There is another one...but there is a story...a sad story...that involves the ER and Solomon...and um my fault ha.

On Tuesday night, Solomon was in his jammies and was cuddling with me on the couch. He decided he was all done cuddling with me so he went to get down and I was holding his right hand and blanket with my left hand. He kinda rolled off of me and plopped to the floor...and started screaming bloody murder. I jumped up and was asking him what was wrong and where his "owie" was. He was saying his arm and was freaking out if I would even touch him. I screamed for Will and he came running. He started palpating his arm and Solomon was just beside himself in pain. Will said he was sure his elbow was dislocated. He tried to to get it back into place but because he was screaming so loud Will decided that we needed to get it X-rayed. We couldn't get a shirt on him, much less in his carseat, so Will held him (because of course he didn't want me [heartbreak]) and I drove. We got there and waited and Solomon didn't move. If Will tried to adjust his position at all he started freaking out. They finally took him back for X-rays and of course I couldn't go in with him so I sat outside in tears (did I mention I had been crying from the moment this happened???) while Solomon SCREAMED everytime he was touched by the tech. They were in there forever and finally Will and Solomon came out and Will said, "Its not dislocated anymore...the Xray positioning put it back in place!!!" And Solomon was moving his arm all around saying "Look I can move my arm now." I was SO relieved!!!! Finally my little buddy was back! He proceeding to tell everyone in the ER, "I just know everything!" haha. We had to wait for another hour for the Dr to discharge us and say that he was fine, which we already knew. It was a LONG night and a sad one, but it turned out fine. It was heartbreaking and I felt horrible but the ER Dr said that he sees TONS of kids a week for the same thing because the ligament doesn't calcify until about age 3. SO now Im scared to touch the little squirmer :)

Our friends, Paul and Jenna got married on Friday...which is another post. And the move is in 3 days!!! So it is really late and this is the only time I have to blog...cause we are SUPER busy finishing up all of our packing. I probably wont be writing again until we are PA residents...until then...

Firsts and Accomplishments.

So much to say. So little time. First of all, the election is over. What an exciting time to be living in...I have always wondered what it felt like to be a slave freed, march with MLK or be present for one of his incredible speeches, to feel the freedom of a woman who had the same rights as men...and while that feeling of incredible freedom will never be felt by me, I get to have been apart of a time where the first African American president was elected. The majority (who voted for Barak Obama) of our country saw no color at all and elected the person they knew to be the best choice to get our nation out of complete chaos. It is exciting to me, emotional, and all together one of the most important (historical) times of my life.A few things to be noted: my mother and most of my family members apart from my sister have a vehement hatred for our new president elect. They thought God would be in control if the McCain/Palin ticket was elected, but now that they were not "God is allowing our country to go through dark dark times." It is a little frustrating to me. I understand that "one issue voters" usually don't understand the importance of a thriving economy, illegal unjust wars started and justified with lies, health care, aid for the less fortunate. But to assume that God is only in control if the winner of a secular contest between two flawed human beings, is who you like the best, is just an abomination to me. For I truly believe and have a confidence in my God, that even if the candidate I didn't vote for was elected that God is and always will be in control. Enough of that...but I am definitely happy that they are over...hopefully people can return to their normal selves and remember what it is to be kind to those who don't always agree with you.

We finally got to hear the baby's heart beat today. I am 14 weeks and I really just thought that we would have got to hear or see something before now...so it was totally surreal to hear that sweet sound FINALLY!!! And with our little Solomon present!! We wanted him to feel apart of it, and not feel frightened or anything. He has really never been in a Dr's office and they can be pretty intimidating, so we told him what was going to happen and told him that the baby's heart was going to sound like a fast "boom boom boom boom"...and for weeks we have been talking about it. It was so exciting. I got to record his reaction. It was so much fun. We have our next appt on the 4th of December...and we have scheduled our ultrasound to find out what we are having (sorry Corin, we just aren't as strong as you hehe) for next month as well.

I'm really loving Ina May's Guide To Childbirth. I loved all of the birth stories so much and they really helped me feel a connection to other mothers who have given birth in their homes surrounded by people who love them, in they way birth was initially intended. I'm feeling much more confident and am hoping that things work out so that we can have the birth that we want...whatever that ends up being. Does anyone have book/movie recommendations for me to help me surround myself in all things home birth????

Our move is in less that two months. I can't believe it. And after 7 1/2 long and hard years full of sweat and tears, Will is FINALLY graduating in FIVE WEEKS!!! Oh I am SOOOO excited for him. I cannot imagine what it feels like to accomplish something like a Doctorate...but I am SOOOO proud of him and all of his hard work.

Solomon has moved into a HUGE language explosion and with that came a (very age appropriate) stuttering stage. Had I not had friends who had gone through the same thing with their 2 1/2 year olds, I would have probably been a freaked out mess. It is supposed to just pass once the child adjusts from speaking in 3-4 word sentences to 7-8 and more word sentences. He is seriously so stinking smart, picks up all the words I DO NOT want him to say, and has the memory of...well...of something with a really good memory!!!

Thats puts us just about up to date I think. I have some more Halloween photos to post...hopefully I can do that soon...

A New Birth

I read quite a few birthing blogs. The Human Pacifier is one of my favorites. She posted this video...

And while I loved it and was totally inspired by it, it kind of freaks me out. Not for reasons one might think though. I have really wanted to have a home birth for a second child... but I'm scared and I cannot figure out why. Solomons birth was in a hospital...with an OBGYN that I loved, who really pushed me to take nothing for my pain and do it totally naturally, like the birth plan that we went over together. After 26 hours of hard labor I felt like I was losing my mind...since I hadn't slept in 3 days, and I just wanted like an hour of sleep. I got the epidural and Will and I both feel no regret. Would I like to do it again? I would definitely try not to. I just...ugh...I just know that I could do it if I were at home but I get SO nervous thinking about it. It's not an issue of safety. There is nothing about a hospital that makes me feel safe. I just feel like Im not strong enough to go through more than 26 hours...it was SO much! I just remember telling Solomon, "Baby, you are our only child...for life" haha because the contractions were unlike anything I have ever ever endured...and Im scared that I would be a total wuss and fail at home. I need pep talked...major pep talking. I want to do it with my whole heart, and I hope that I find the bravery before baby number two comes our way...

This video is beautiful...and inspiring...and I hope with all my heart mine can somewhat resemble it...

Time...or Not?

Will and I just cannot decide and keep changing out minds every other day....

We are moving from Los Angeles, Ca to Pittsburgh (or a dinky-sized suburb), Pa in early Jan 2009. Will graduates from Chiropractic School in December and then we are off to "make a life for ourselves" haha...finally!

So our big question...and I would really like some feedback, if you have any...

Do we want to move across the country into a new house/apt, decorate our new home, get adjusted, get Solomon adjusted, get all settled, all while I am pregnant...or wait until we are settled to start trying????

Solomon is 25 months old right now. So if we got pregnant this month (specifically this friday-tuesday haha) Solomon would almost be 3 when a new baby would be born. If we wait until say, March of 2009, Solomon would be 3 1/2 when a new baby would be born. We do not want them to be too far apart. We are already wondering if we waited to long...obviously we didn't since we do not have another babu yet, and Gods plans are perfect, but still, he LOVES children...and sometimes I wish we had another one of our very own(that is until I remember the times aka every moment of everyday when Solomon was a wee babe, and I was hyterically crying because I had no idea what I was doing. haha) Truth be told, I feel like trying this month...

I am a little afriad of the weight gain...if a little afriad means absolutely terrified. I still have 15lbs from Solomon and I am just worried that I will never ever lose it...thats a minor detail, or it should be at least...whew...ok...

Any thoughts???

Angie has done it again...really shown me such a perfect image of the God I long to serve. I struggle immensly with this. I want so much to be perfect at serving Him. When I fail, I tend to give up. I just want to look at my life as she explained..."Wow. I don't look like myself in that one. Let me try that again." I need to remember this constantly...what a beautiful image of the mercy and love that I absolutely do not deserve.
